Write a letter

Summary: Participants write a letter offering support and advice for a bullying victim and a bullying perpetrator.

Target grades: 6th and above

Minimum time needed: 40 minutes

Materials: pen/pencil and paper

Connection to bullying: Writing a letter to someone else helps the writer better understand different perspectives

Activity instructions:

Ask students to think about a time that they felt hurt, or a time that they have been bullied or seen someone bullied. The student writes a letter as if they were someone else to provide support and advice.

Next, ask students to think about a time that they hurt someone or bullied them. The student now writes a letter providing support and advice to the bully to help them not bully again.

Remind students to be respectful in their letters. Let students know that they will not be asked to share their letters.

Discussion:

  • What kinds of support and advice did you give the bully victim?
  • What kinds of support and advice did you give the bully?
