If you hear anyone talk about direct plans to harm him or herself, immediately summon a counselor, a supervisor, or call 911. It is important not to ignore statements about self harm.
Talking about bullying can be difficult because many of us have experiences with bullying ourselves, and these personal experiences can affect us when we talk about bullying. Before conducting HEAR activities, think about or talk with someone you trust about your own experiences with bullying. Think about how your experience might influence your role as a guide. Will you be less sympathetic to some youth, whether they be victims or perpetrators? Will it be emotional for you to hear about these youth’s experiences? How will you deal with this?
